Expert Insights, Pragmatic Solutions

Guiding Principles

1.  We solve thorny people problems
We work on thorny business problems in which people issues are central.  These problems require that we see people issues in their business context – we cannot be just business consultants or just HR consultants.  We provide the greatest value when we work on problems in which the business need is compelling but the problem is murky, the likely solutions are complex, change management is difficult, and/or organizational politics are blocking solutions.  We do not look for opportunities to implement canned solutions that we have used many times before.  We seek client partnerships that call for us to work at the cutting edge.

2.  We are seasoned professionals
Senior consultants are heavily engaged in all phases of our projects.  We have worked with dozens of companies, including firms in almost every major industry, over the past 25 years.  Consulting work absorbs us.  We do not sell projects and then hand the real work off to junior consultants.  We believe that a senior team increases the likelihood of success and is more cost-effective in addressing thorny problems.

3.  We combine practical and theoretical knowledge in our work
Both practical and academic knowledge are important in understanding and solving thorny problems.  Many years consulting to major companies and years of academic research have steeped us in both types of knowledge.  We have learned through experience that academic research and reports of other companies’ “best practices” almost never provide the whole answer.  However, greater knowledge gives us better ways of understanding underlying problems, enriches our solution set, and helps us avoid other companies’ mistakes.  We can call on a wide circle of specialists with practical and academic expertise as the need arises.

4.  Our team includes your people
Most consulting firms see major projects as opportunities to develop their junior talent.  We see major projects as opportunities to develop your internal talent.  This gives your firm the option to implement the solution with little or no consulting help in the future.  We will ask that you provide us, whenever possible, with one or more internal people who can become part of the consulting team.
